Dr Jennifer Towns
After graduating from the University of Michigan School of Social Work in 2005, Dr. Jennifer Towns has amassed over 20 years working in the social work field, providing clinical treatment in a variety of settings, including: hospitals, community mental health departments, and private practice. Her current clinical work is based out the private practice that she and her wife own in Ann Arbor, Michigan – and is founded upon an integrative approach which incorporates many treatment modalities, including: EMDR, mind-body/somatic components, IFS/ego states, and attachment work. Her primary areas of specialty include the treatment of complex interpersonal trauma, relationships, and individuals who are part of the queer community.
Dr. Towns has been teaching in higher education for 13 years, for several social work programs, and is the current the BSW Program Director at Adrian College, as well as a lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s MSW program. She earned her PhD in 2018 and her doctoral dissertation focused on the minority stress experiences of the LGBTQ+ population in rural heteronormative areas.
Towns has presented at several conferences and been a member of many workgroups that focus on advancing equity and social justice through education and therapy.
She recently published a book: “Our Deepest Roots: Navigating Past Trauma to Build Healthier Queer Relationships”, which seeks to blend memoir, psychoeducation, and personal growth in ways that provide a unique resource for the LGBTQIA+ population. It has been “Highly Recommended” by Dr. Bruce Perry and has recently become an Amazon #1 bestseller.
